Money questions are high stakes, and AI engines treat them that way. Answers about banks, insurers and fintechs draw on personal-finance media and community discussion, and they are noticeably more cautious than answers in other sectors.
These findings come from the financial services studies in the GEO Compass benchmark: about 42,000 AI answers, led by the UK and US, with India, Germany, Australia, the UAE and Singapore.
Twice as cautious
About 11% of financial services answers that discuss brands frame them negatively, twice the 5% benchmark average. In how-to and recommendation answers it rises to around 15%, where fees, scams, complaints and past regulatory penalties dominate. AI engines remember a bank's history, and they repeat it.
Financial brands are named in 23% of unbranded answers, and their own sites cited in only 8%, both below the benchmark averages.

Comparison publishers settle the price question. In answers about cost and value, Finder and NerdWallet are cited frequently, alongside Reddit threads. Perplexity leans on LinkedIn for financial questions (19% of answers) and cites Reddit in only 6%. The same question reaches different communities depending on the engine.
Local sources lead locally
- United Kingdom: MoneySavingExpert, Forbes, Which?, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and GOV.UK.
- India: LinkedIn appears in about a third of financial services answers with sources, alongside Reddit, Glassdoor, Indiatimes and Moneycontrol. Employer brand and professional reputation feed financial-brand answers.
- Australia: in our wider tracking of Australian banking questions, Reddit, comparison and research sites such as Canstar and InfoChoice, consumer-sentiment research and the industry press shape how banks are described. Bank websites themselves are often outside the most-cited sources, and when they are cited it is usually a fee or product page.
What financial brands should do
- Audit how AI engines describe you, including your history. Find which sources carry legacy issues and make sure current, accurate information sits alongside them.
- Make fees, rates, eligibility and product terms easy to quote on your own site, in plain HTML with structured data. When banks are cited, it is often a product or fee page.
- Work with the comparison sites and personal-finance media that AI engines cite in each market. Make sure your products are listed, current and correctly described.
- Give LinkedIn a role. It is the second most-cited source in financial services overall, and the leading one in India.
- Monitor community discussion on Reddit and local forums. It is cited in about one in ten money answers.
- Watch sentiment by question type. Trust, fee and fraud questions carry the most negative framing.
